Review
Readers will feel transported to the streets of Independence, Missouri and along the Oregon Trail as Luke and Nora's wagon team travels the perilous roads. The author ... describes places with such accuracy and her characters with such detail that her writing comes alive. - Portland Book Review

Everything I wanted in a book
By AvasaCavery
This book was a suspenseful romance, that was detailed, historic, and the characters were believable....in short I am completely in love with this book. Luke is a war hero who decides there isn't anything else left in the dragoons for him/her so she calls it quits to move out to Oregon in one of the most grueling treks in history. Right before her move she visits her friend who runs a brothel and upon chance ends up meeting Nora/Fleur who works for Tess in the brothel and doesn't know Luke is a woman. Not trying to give a to many details Luke and Nora marry and begin their move with Nora's daughter Amy in a wagon train. This book has a lot of substance which I appreciated since its hard to find books over 250 pages nowadays and we grow with the characters as they discover themselves and ups and downs of the trail. It's a book you won't want to put down :)

Highly Realistic Historical Lesbian Romance
By Anastasia
As you can tell by the rating, I really like this book. I'm very reluctant to award five stars, since I figure no book is perfect and I don't want to simply gush about how awesome and amazing and wonderful a book is. So for me, a five star review means that not only are there things I really like about the book, but that I have trouble coming up with any detracting flaws.

My favorite part of both of Jae's novels that I've read thus far (this and Second Nature) is that her detail-oriented writing, implying meticulous research, makes the story seem unquestionably believable from start to finish. There is a high level of historical accuracy throughout this book, such as depictions of the multitude of daily chores and dangers on the trail.

Another favorite part of Backwards to Oregon is that Jae takes the time to develop her main characters and let them naturally gravitate towards each other. It is clear to see how both women grow throughout the novel as they work through the many tangles and secrets of their marriage. And they don't just grow into a couple; they each grow as individual characters. I think this type of natural-seeming character growth is a too-rare treat, so I was delighted to see it. Others may complain here that the pace was a bit slow, but even the few times I glanced ahead to see when a known event would occur, I always found the intervening pages quite interesting and worthwhile.

A second point about the protagonists is that they are both thoroughly captivating characters, or at least I think so. Luke is a loner who doesn't want complications added to her life yet keeps trying to help Nora and her daughter. And Nora, though unused to physical labor and wary about romantic or marital relationships because of her background, is a loving mother who is willing to marry a stranger and take to the Oregon Trail to provide a better future for her daughter.

Since I'm in serious danger of gushing, I'll just conclude by saying I love this book, there are lots of things about it I think are wonderful and seen too rarely (such as the character growth, the gentle chemistry between the two main characters, and the important roles of the supporting characters), and I really can't think of anything I'd like to see changed about this novel.

I couldn't put this book down
By CAB
I really loved this story which is unusually because I'm not a huge fan of historical era type stories, but I loved the characters Luke and Nora and I find myself wanting to re-read the story. I can count on one hand the stories I've wanted to read again.

The story takes place in the 1850's and Luke is a woman passing as a man in part because the options for a single woman are get married and essentially be considered property or be a prostitute.

Luke and Nora get married as a type of business arrangement, but of course nothing is ever really that straight forward. Especially when Nora is unaware that Luke is really a woman. As they head off to Oregon to start a new life they encounter a variety of obstacles which test they relationship and their courage.

I had some very visceral reactions to a number of the characters in this story and thank goodness that they are fictional because I really hated Bill Larson of course then Broderick Cowen shows up and I realize I only detest Bill. Both of these detestable characters offer in interesting insight into the personalities of both Nora and Luke so despite hating them, they add value to the plot.
There is also a specific scene in the story that I keep finding myself drawn back to where Luke has professed his love for Nora and when Nora can't accept that, you see Luke mentally berate himself because he feels so unworthy of someone actually loving him.

Now I find myself compelled to read the sequel "Hidden Truths" because I want to know what happens next.
