From Publishers Weekly
The renowned horror author selects 19 nailbiting tales for Beware!: R.L. Stine Picks His Favorite Scary Stories, including "The Black Ferris" by Ray Bradbury, William Sleator's "The Elevator," a couple by Alvin Schwartz and a few by Stine himself. Each opens with a brief introduction by the Goosebumps author and includes bewitching b&w pictures by a number of illustrators. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-This collection of 23 stories and poems includes selections by Ray Bradbury, Patricia McKissack, Edward Gorey, Bram Stoker, William Sleator, Alvin Schwartz, Jack Prelutsky, Shel Silverstein, and others. Among the illustrators represented are Brian Pinkney, Quentin Blake, Gahan Wilson, and Peter Horvath. While all of the stories are available elsewhere, some of the best are found in more obscure sources. Having them in one volume, with each tale introduced by Stine, makes this a good choice for most collections. The selections read aloud well and are short enough to read in several minutes. The more terrifying selections are juxtaposed with those that are funny, providing some comic relief. Children who enjoyed Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1981) and More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1984, both HarperCollins) will want to add this title to their reading lists. The pen-and-ink and charcoal illustrations visually clue readers as to how each tale ranks on the "scary barometer." The grizzly selections have very dark pictures while the more lighthearted ones have clean, clear strokes and more white space on the page. This is an obvious choice for children who love a good scare from time to time.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. Supplying a tempting preface for each selection, the Guru of Gruesome brings together 19 brief stories, folktales, poems, and cartoons from the likes of Ray Bradbury, William Sleator, Robert W. Service ("The Cremation of Sam McGee"), Gahan Wilson, and Alvin Schwartz. Fans of classic horror will relish Stine's retelling of a rat-rich Bram Stoker tale, and a ghoulishly jocular Jack Kamen comic-book episode from the 1950s; modern contributions include verses from Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky, a deliciously horrific episode from Roald Dahl's witches, and a sampling of Stine's own stories and his retelling of the Golem legend. There's something in this diverse literary buffet for every taste--including enough genuine eeriness to make it a discomfiting choice for under-the-covers reading. John Peters

A Wickedly Delicious Brew
By Lisa Mallen
On the threshold of R.L. Stine's favorite holiday, Halloween, he's come out with a wonderful new book that is like a witches brew with multiple ingredients. The main ingredient in BEWARE is 'scary'. Added to the mix of scary stories, are some funny ones, tantalizing poems, a horror-comic, spooky illustrations, and like a cherry-on-top of an ice cream sundae, are R.L. Stine's intriguing introductions. I really liked reading an assortment of thrilling stories, R.L. Stine's favorites by different authors, the two he wrote himself, and two he retold. The scary ones definitely gave me chills. I now have a new appreciation for rats, ferris wheels, halloween costumes, elevators, witches, ghosts, and all kinds of creatures that can surface from one's imagination. Everyone will have their own favorites...Another cool thing are the spiders and cobwebs that trickle down each page while you read...This is a great book for both children and adults who like twists and thrills.

Delightfully Scary!
By Margaret
The perfect collection of scary stories. My grandson and I cuddle in a large chair with the lights turned down. I read each story with character voices which he loves. There's not a boring story in the bunch. We have a wonderful time.

I would also recommend Scary Stories: The complete 3-Book Collection by Alvin Schwartz.

Great Book!
By B. Williams
My 10 yr old 5th grader is reading this book now. Every night before bed we turn the lights off and get a flashlight to read the spooky stories. We read the story about the rats last night. I am shocked he was able to sleep with the lights off! LOL We are both enjoying the book very much! I think my son likes that it's short stories. He feels like he's accomplished something when we finish a story and he can easily recap in his reading journal for school.

DSM-5 Insanely Simplified: Unlocking the Spectrums within DSM-5 and ICD-10, by Steven Buser M.D

The release of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Version 5 (DSM-5) marked one of the biggest changes to the field of mental health diagnosis in over 20 years. DSM-5 Insanely Simplified provides a summary of key concepts of the new diagnostic schema including a section on the upcoming ICD-10. DSM-5 Insanely Simplified utilizes a variety of devices to help clinicians memorize complex criteria and ideas about the different diagnoses. Cartoons, mnemonic devices, and summary tables allow clinicians and students to quickly grasp and retain broad concepts and subtle nuances related to psychiatric diagnosis. DSM-5 Insanely Simplified fosters quick mastery of the most important concepts introduced in DSM-5 while offering an entirely new way of looking at mental health along a continuum. This new approach avoids simply "labeling" clients by placing them along spectrums that range from normal to problematic symptoms. Mental health professionals as well as laymen interested in a deeper understanding of emotional well-being will appreciate the synthesis of deep psychology and modern approaches to diagnosis.

Highly recommended
By Dr. Erel Shalit
"Lovely" is clearly not the correct attribute for a book on the diagnosis of mental illness. But this book does come in very handy, both for the seasoned clinician who might need quick reminders, and for younger colleagues, as well as the generally interested reader, who wants to get a comprehensive view into the otherwise complex labyrinth of mental diagnoses.
Similarly to the loosening of distinct categories evident in DSM-5, the author goes further in deconstructing the otherwise too firm diagnostic categorizations.
And the Jungian chapter at the end is a bonus!
The book is highly recommended, and, in fact, makes for enjoyable reading.

Simple Guide for those of us shuffled in the changes & lost studying for state licensing
By Lisa Leigh
Easy explanation of a book that is supposed to be simple in the first place. I skipped to page 15 and learned 3 things immediately. I'm studying for the NCMHCE and have been out of grad school, working in the field for a while when the switch came, not only the DSM5 but the actual exam ( I live in Florida) so double whammy. I read the entire book in a few hours and will re-read it again to highlight what I missed. I recommend this for anyone caught between the DSM IV TR and 5 in addition to learning new material, working in the field, and learning how to take a different kind of exam. This little gem of a book along with all my other study materials has already helped lessen my stress and explained in a very practical, yet clinical way how to navigate to changes and make the 5 less menacing and more friendly, like not the dark side..."I can use the force" and actually understand the concept of spectrum. Change is constant, yet it is helpful to know what those changes are and how they affect/effect our world situation. Just my thoughts, everyone has an opinion yet this book has certainly enriched my experience with the DSM 5.

Trace Elements (Gower & Saxon Book 1), by Kate Donovan

Special Agent Annika Trace is the hottest thing in law enforcement—at least on TV. Her long legs, designer suits, and hunky sidekick have garnered millions of fans, one of whom—a four-year-old kidnap victim named Linzie—is refusing to talk to the real FBI. In desperation, Special Agent Trace—a.k.a. actress Nikki Gower—is called in to help.

Special Agent Josh Saxon became a hero when he brought Linzie back safely. Now he’s out to catch the kidnappers and doesn’t need some Hollywood caricature of a federal agent interfering in his case. But when Nikki establishes a rapport with the child, Josh admits she might just get him enough information to track down the culprits. And even as Josh and Nikki spar over the best way to get the job done, another rapport is being established—on a much more physical and decidedly more adult level—as Josh discovers firsthand how Nikki makes the airwaves sizzle.

* Bonus Material! This book includes the pilot episode from Nikki Gower’s hit TV show, Trace Elements.

"Fresh and new. . . the chemistry between the characters helped make this book a very memorable read. . . . Kate Donovan sails up on my list as another favorite author." —Beate T., Goodreads

GOWAN & SAXON vs. CASTLE & BECKETT
By Snarky Mom Michelle
(Originally published on SnarkyMomReads)

I'm a huge fan of the tongue-in-check humor employed by the TV series, Castle, where a writer tags along & helps a New York city detective solve crimes. What makes it even better is that the writer(s) of Castle have decided to make Richard Castle "real" - with his books being published, series being made into graphic novels and even a website. Imagine the fun I've had with the opportunity to read (in exchange for an HONEST review) the recently published novel, "TRACE ELEMENTS" by Kate Donovan! I think I enjoyed it so much because it has vague similarities to Castle with its expanded media...

"TRACE ELEMENTS" is a 191 page romantic suspense novel penned by Kate Donovan, but tag-lined as if it were an actual television show. Josh Saxon is an FBI agent who recently found & rescued a kidnapped four year old and is still trying to solve the "whodunnit" of the kidnapping. To help the young child feel safer, the parents request that the FBI approach the actress of their favorite FBI TV show, Nikki Gower, who portrays Agent Annika Trace, will come reassure the girl she is not in any more danger. (See where it's going here? An actress in a TV show, portraying an FBI agent, needs to come "be" an FBI agent, etc....)

While at times the premise seems a bit far-fetched, well, that's why it is fiction. It's funny to see the dialogue between the real agent & the "real" agent... and interesting to watch them fall for each other. Again - while it seems a bit far-fetched... IT'S FICTION. The mystery in the story is entertaining and not too transparent that it can't keep a reader involved, and it's funny how Nikki thinks about everything in terms of what her character would do or how the show would go. Most interesting, though, is that at the end Kate Donovan has written the "TV Pilot" for the original "Trace Elements" show. Now, I have to admit - at that point, I was starting to feel a bit dizzy, with the show within the book about the story surrounding the show... whew! Get what I mean? And really - this roundabout poking fun at itself is what makes this such an enjoyable book!

At $2.99 this is a great value - and since it looks as if Kate Donovan has quite a backlist of novels, you may just find another author to add to your TBR (to-be-read) pile!

Not what I expected, but better.
By HannahPilar
I didn't know what to think when I first got this book, maybe it was a Castle type story minus Nathan Fillion, I was wrong. This was a great book lovable characters and not a sugar coated storyline.

Special Agent Josh Saxon has hit a dead end after the successful return of four year old kidnapped victim Linzie. She has remained silent about her kidnappers due to the trauma she had to endure, she has only one wish to speak to her favorite T.V. character, Special Agent Annika Trace. The FBI bring in actress Nikki Gower to help. Josh is not happy when he first hears that they are bringing in an actress to help but soon changes his tune when Nikki bonds with the child bringing her a little further out of her shell everyday she is with her enough she is able to help give clues and identify suspects.

The chemistry between Josh and Nikki is electric. Unable to keep it professional they soon end up in bed together, but between the case and the baggage from his past and her current issues they always end up arguing after sex and making up a few hours later. I really do like this book, but I am a fan of FBI stories so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked reading it. I want more I hope to read more books from the series, my hope for the series is that it doesn't get to soap opera-ish.

B+ rating.....
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
I had received another one of Kate Donovan's books for review (Play by Play and it was also good and creative) and it included the first chapter of this book. I found myself intrigued by the creative story line and immediately purchased and read it (totally ignoring the 1000+ books already in my TBR pile.) This book and this author have definitely been a pleasant surprise.

Like I said, the story line is incredibly creative. Josh is an FBI agent and he's in the middle of a case that's getting worse and worse. He saved a 4 yo little girl from a kidnapping, but they didn't catch the kidnappers. He needs her to give him information, but she's completely clammed up and won't tell him a thing. She's terrified and as the hours and days go by the chances of catching the kidnappers become even slimmer.

In an act of desperation, they bring in actress, Nikki Gower, who plays an FBI agent on the 4 yo's favorite TV show. They hope the little girl will trust her enough to talk to her. Nikki isn't your typical actress. She fell into her career on the way to actually working for the FBI. The creator of her TV show has used her life as inspiration for the show. But Josh is less than thrilled to have her there meddling, until it starts to work and he begins to realize that she does have a natural talent for this.

This book is just the start of the series and although the book ends well, there's a few loose ends out there that you can see are definitely going to come up in future books. I can't wait!

It's a great set-up for a book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. There were a few rough spots in the book (especially in the first half) where the character actions gave me a bit of whiplash in their too rushed changes of heart and actions. But overall, the book was good enough that I could overlook that. Kate Donovan has a great writing voice and I foresee it getting better and smoother as she goes on. Her stories are very creative. The two I've read have been great just in the completely new twists that she includes in her stories. Overall, her books are easy to read and her characters are absolutely fabulous. I definitely look forward to reading more!

Review

"Alan Carr has pulled off, with this textbook, an unusual and extraordinary feat: unusual in managing singlehandedly to produce a guide to clinical theory and practice with such a comprehensive range; extraordinary in formulating multi-system and developmental conceptual frameworks that succeed convincingly in integrating many of the themes and ‘loose ends’ in child and adolescent clinical psychology. The author combines impressive scholarship and clinical knowledge in a reader-friendly book which should be of inestimable value to post-graduate clinical trainees and, indeed, to experienced practitioners." - Martin Herbert, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Child Psychology, University of Exeter
