About the Author
Danny Shaw teaches Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender at the City University of New York. He holds a Masters in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is fluent in Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Kreolu and has a fair command of French. He has worked and organized in over forty different countries, opening his spirit to countless testimonies about the inhumanity of the international economic system. A Golden Gloves boxer, he fought twice in Madison Square Garden for the NYC heavyweight championship. He teaches boxing, yoga and nutrition. Shaw works in the national leadership of the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation and is the managing editor of LiberationSchool.org. He is a mentor to young organizers and the father of two Life Warriors—Ernesto Rafael and Caua Amaru. Mediocre, predictable tale

Even good authors sometimes produce lackluster work, and this is an example. It's obvious from the start how things will end up, and indeed they go exactly as expected. The protagonist's tale could be summed up as "Gosh, I was so surprised when my wife joined the alien cult after being increasingly obsessed with it for weeks." Well, duh.

One short story only for Kindle

Reading the previous reviews led me to believe this was a short story collection. For the Kindle at least, it is not. This is only contains 'A Song for Lya' not any of the other stories mentioned. Its a well written story but I would have rather paid a little bit more and purchased the whole collection.

About the Author

Frédéric Delavier is a gifted artist with an exceptional knowledge of human anatomy. He studied morphology and anatomy for five years at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied dissection for three years at the Paris Faculté de Médecine.

The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, Delavier is currently a journalist for the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle and a contributor to several other muscle publications, including Men's Health Germany. He is the author of the best-selling Strength Training Anatomy, Women’s Strength Training Anatomy, The Strength Training Anatomy Workout, Delavier's Core Training Anatomy, and Delavier's Stretching Anatomy.

Delavier won the French powerlifting title in 1988 and makes annual presentations on the sport applications of biomechanics at conferences in Switzerland. His teaching efforts have earned him the Grand Prix de Techniques et de Pédagogie Sportive. Delavier lives in Paris, France.

Michael Gundill has written 13 books on strength training, sport nutrition, and health, including coauthoring The Strength Training Anatomy Workout and The Strength Training Anatomy Workout II. His books have been translated into multiple languages, and he has written over 500 articles for bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide, including Iron Man and Dirty Dieting. In 1998 he won the Article of the Year Award at the Fourth Academy of Bodybuilding Fitness & Sports Awards in California.

Gundill started weightlifting in 1983 in order to improve his rowing performance. Most of his training years were spent completing specific lifting programs in his home. As he gained muscle and refined his program, he began to learn more about physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics and started studying those subjects in medical journals. Since 1995 he has been writing about his discoveries in various bodybuilding and fitness magazines worldwide.

Great primer for MMA conditioning.

This is a really great book overall. It contains a wealth of information regarding how to condition your body for MMA. I truly wish I would have had this book nine years ago the first time I stepped on the mat. When I first started training mma, jujitsu, and combatives years ago I poured through tons and tons of books and magazine articles trying to figure out how to strength train for fighting. The beauty of this book is that the information is spot on, all in one location and is what you will hear from other respected fight conditioning coaches/specialists. The info and exercises are all pretty legit, and are employed by most fighters at some point in there training.

This book is almost completely dedicated to strength, power and endurance training for MMA. There is a little bit of info regarding cardiovascular issues in MMA, but its really only a paragraph or two.

I must say, this book probably has more to offer someone that is unfamiliar with MMA/fight sport conditioning. If you've been training for years and have tons of books on fight conditioning and training methods, you really won't find anything new here. But if you're just starting your MMA training, this book will save you tons of time by giving you most of the info that you need to know about how to set up your program, what exercises to pick, what muscle groups to focus on, and how to incorporate your conditioning into your fight training schedule. In fact, if you're looking for a reasonably priced primer for fight conditioning, this is probably your best buy. Trust me, I've read a ton of them. This book gives you a lot of info without any fluff.

A more experienced practitioner will thoroughly enjoy the excellent drawings and anatomical explanations used to describe why and how the suggested exercises work. For example even if you already have a working knowledge of what muscles are affected in say, an arm bar escape, its really cool to see those muscles highlighted in the drawings with an explanation of why a hammer curl and the isometric version of the hammer curl will help you work some of the muscles involved in an arm bar escape. Its nothing you won't know already, but its still pretty awesome.

Another really great feature of the book is that there are exercise suggestions based on the technique you want to improve. So, if you want to improve your punching power, there is a section devoted to doing so. If you want to increase your ability to pick someone up, or take a punch to the jaw, or throw a harder kick, or a shaper elbow, and a lot more, there are sections for all of those things as well. You get the exercise suggestions, an explanation of why the suggested exercise will improve the specified technique, and a really sweet drawing of the involved muscle groups and photos depicting how the exercise is performed. Absolutely fantastic!

There are also several routines in the back of the book that are designed for different goals at all levels. There are beginner routines as well as advanced routines, and they range from power routines to endurance routines. Most of them are pretty decent.

The book itself is very attractive. Its sort of got like a text book feel to it. But no where near as boring. There are tons of drawings and photos on every page, and they compliment the text instead of competing with it for your attention.

There are some things that I wish would have been done differently, or that they will include in a second edition.

First, like I said earlier, the information is pretty basic. Its rock solid, but its very basic. For example, they talk about the close grip bench press and how it works better for punching and pushing someone off of you than the traditional wide grip bench press due to the hand placement and the muscles used being pretty much the same. And thats great, and true, but why not add a few more exercises that are maybe a bit more advanced and maybe even more sport specific, like a doing close grip pushups on a medicine ball, which is very similar to a close grip press, and also known to increase punching power? JC Santana(look him up if you don't know who he is, he's a beast and does a ton of work with fighters) has used the exercise to prepare world class fighters, wrote and posted articles about it, and for some reason they don't include it in the exercise list for increasing punching power. I don't know if they intended the exercises to be basic, but I really wish they would have gone a bit more in depth with the exercise suggestions. That's just a single example and its not a big deal if you're new to all of this, but if you're not, you're going to see a lot of the same things you've seen before.

The second thing I wasn't crazy about and hope they change in the future is that a lot of the photos of the exercises are from some of Delavier's other books and the models obviously aren't fighters. This is a really small, trivial thing to complain about, but it did take away from the MMA "feel" quite a bit.

All in all this is a really great book. It comes at an excellent price point and contains enough information to get you started with your MMA conditioning program. Almost every basic aspect of strength, power and endurance training for MMA is covered to some extent. If you're a MMA newbie, a personal trainer wondering how you would train a fighter, or an advanced MMA practitioner that collects the best books on MMA and fighting in general, this is a great book to have in your collection.

Fantastic book on resistance training for Martial Artists of all types

Good information on what muscles are used in different types of marital arts - from boxing, to kicking, to grappling. While the title says "anatomy": it should be marketed more as a training book - it has a substantial details on resistance workout and exercises that benefit those various martial arts and even has them divided by beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Great book, but then Delaviers books are all great.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE FAKE REVIEWS

***Words of warning. I smell a fake reviews***

After skim reading this book, the only thing you would have learnt is how to run a "Hello world" program and that's pretty much it.

Reviews states "it's the perfect study guide", "it's made me a better programmer" and one reviewer even goes as far as stating "he loves the amazing quantity of examples and step by step instructions and would make you an expert in a few lessons" oh please stop it..

Don't be fooled by the fake reviews, there is absolutely NO WAY in the world a 25 page study guide... YES 25 pages, I repeat again... 25 pages could equip anyone with the knowledge and experise to write code.

So what's covered in the book you say?

• A very very brief discussion on the basics and fundamentals as well as history of C++

• Thorough steps in teaching you how to write a "Hello World" program, followed by an in depth breakdown on how it works. The author even teaches you to write a complicated version of the "Hello World" program.

If you're destined to become a C++ programmer in writing "Hello World" programs and nothing else then this 25 page study guide is for you.

There are tons of free resources out there such as video tutorials on Streaming sites and websites that will do a much better job than most of the books on Amazon. One thing you'll learn as a programmer is using search engines such as G... And Y and video tutorials are your friend. They dramatically reduces time in research compared to looking for answers in books.

An Excellent and Unique Perspective on the World of Cognitive Neuroscience

I read this book as part of a college course on the same topic, and to this day it still serves as an invaluable source of knowledge and understanding. It's written in a way that's accessible, yet still covers the material in detail, ultimately providing a nuanced look at many common themes within the field. Even as a student with little background on these topics, I found it easy to dive right in and be a part of the conversation, having this book as a resource.

It's organized in a logical way -- starting with an introduction and overview of the methods / common practices of the field, and then moving into specific controversies, which are laid out chapter by chapter. These controversies cover a broad range of topics, from perception to attention, memory, language, social processing, and others. For any given controversy, the author presents findings on both sides of the debate, and encourages the reader to think critically along the way. This may have been my favorite aspect of the book -- it facilitates the formation of critical analyses/interpretations of the many different pieces of research that are presented.

This is certainly a valuable piece of literature to have -- not only for it's unique collection and comparison of large bodies of scientific research, but also for the sort of critical thinking skills it encourages.

Great Review of Controversies, Especially for Those Who Have Little/No Previous Knowledge on the Topics

Scott's book is a very helpful guide for students, professors, or other psychology professionals wishing to pick up some information on current controversies in cognitive neuroscience. Many methods are involved as well as a great range of papers and topics; all papers are accessible and free. Both sides of each controversy are well considered and good evidence is given for both sides.

My only issue with the controversies is my lack of intimate knowledge with certain methods, so I sometimes would get bogged down in trying to understand exactly what was happening technically in each study. Overall however, the point was well-conveyed and I always had a basic understanding of the arguments from each side of a controversy.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about a variety of hot topics in cognitive neuroscience.

Harry F. Wolcott (Ph.D. Stanford) taught at the University of Oregon, serving on both the faculties of education and anthropology. He authored several ethnographic texts that included his experiences among the Kwakiutl Indians of British Columbia and with the African Beer Gardens of Bulawayo, Rhodesia, as well on ethnographic method and on writing itself, with a focus on qualitative research. Controversial in that he dismisses concerns about validity or generalizability ... which is okay with me. Buyer Beware: Misleading Presentation

What's in a name? "The Essential Spinoza: Ethics and Related Writings" - it seems clear enough, but in the world of internet book-buying, things are not always as they seem.

There are in fact two books available through Amazon with this same title. One has been edited by two reputable academics, Morgan and Shirley, and contains an introduction and critical apparatus. The other is published by an outfit called Classic Books International, and is just the bare text - in a very unappealing typeface - that has all the looks of a copy-and-paste job, with the pasting done crooked onto the page most of the time.

There are editions of Spinoza available for half the price of this "Classic Books" effort. I spent the extra money thinking I would be getting an attractive and authoritative presentation of this great philosopher's work. Next time I'll be more circumspect about favourable reviews ending with "This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition."

In the meantime, this "Classic Book" is winging its way straight back to Amazon for refund.

This is a perfect version of the Ethics. Shirley's translation is good, but what's better is the extensive reference material in the back of the book. Each proposition is listed singly, without proofs or scholia; a list of definitions and axioms; and also a cross-reference of each definition, axiom, or previous proposition Spinoza uses to prove any given proposition.

The price is not right, but an excellent book

Perhaps I shouldn't argue with the publishers of an optimization textbook about price calculations, but how on earth did they come up with this figure? Unless you have corporate funds to back you up, go to the library and get it there.

Having said that, this is a terrific textbook, a neat reference on all the important results in stochastic optimization. Its presentation is clear and concise, and prerequisites are briefly gathered in no less than fourteen appendices. It would be ideal to have it on the shelf, but... have I mentioned the price?

This is exemplified in his current work and previous publications, including Muslim Cities in the Later Middle Ages (1967, 1984), Middle Eastern Cities (edited, 1969), Contemporary Islamic Movements in Historical Perspective (1983), Islam, Politics and Social Movements, co-edited with Edmund Burke (1988), A History of Islamic Societies (1988, 2002), and Islamic Societies to the Nineteenth Century: A Global History (2012).

Excellent Islamic History Book

I am Muslim and thought this book gave a very straightforward, honest, and neutral history of Islam. The author is a non-Muslim scholar of Islam much like Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, William Montgomery Watt, and others. I really appreciate this book as the author writes many wonderful things, especially about the life of Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an.
