After finally getting to visit the city of Hyderabad - the former capital of India's largest princely state - this summer, I became interested in reading John Zubrzycki's The Last Nizam: An Indian Prince In The Australian Outback.

The first 150 or so pages summarises the history of the first 7 of Hyderabad's 8 dynastic rulers, their battles, their lifestyle, and their dealings with the British who had a strong controlling influence on their state for a number of centuries. The author writes about this period informatively, but not interestingly.

In 1947, when India became independent, Hyderabad and the other more than 500 princely states were left by the departing British to face an uncertain future. Zubrycki describes Hyderabad's somewhat violent incorporation into the new nation of India and the subsequent fate of the Asaf Jah dynasty (led by its Nizams) that had ruled it for many centuries. This is where his book begins to become more of a pleasure to read.

As predicted by a fakir during the life of the first Nizam, the death of the 7th Nizam marked the absolute end of the dynasty's rule. What was it that might have helped fulfil this prediction? It might have been the incorporation of Hyderabad into a then socialist-leaning nation. The 8th Nizam's preference for things mechanical as opposed to matters regal was not conducive to the continuance of a dynasty, nor was preferring to live on a desolate farm in Australia rather than in one of his palaces in Hyderabad. The factors that led to things falling apart in the former princely state are described in the chapters in the book, which are largely dedicated to the life of the 8th Nizam, with whom the author has met and become well-acquainted. These chapters help rescue a book, which began by holding my attention poorly, to become quite interesting.

Undoubtedly, this is an important book for anyone interested in the history of the princely states, but possibly not the most riveting history book ever written.

Strangely absent from American bookstores

The only nit I will pick is the author's belaboring of accounting details pertaining to the finances of the last Nizam. Otherwise, this book is a very readable, interesting, and valuable history of princely Hyderabad, with a fascinating biography of the last of the line, taking us with him right up to recent years. My wife brought this book back from a trip to Pakistan; otherwise, I never would have been treated to it, since American booksellers have for some very bad reason chosen not to distribute it. If you can find it, read it!

A Fine Primer on Ireland

Robert Kee's "Ireland: A History" is, simply put, a fine introductory overview of modern Ireland. By "modern" I refer to the time from a bit before the Viking invasion (roughly 797 C.E.), through the Free State to the founding of the Republic and into "The Troubles" of today. For my money, the book's major flaw was its brief, superficial treatment of ancient Celtic Ireland. There is so much more to Ireland's Gaelic past than Kee covers that one will need other books to fill this gap. As a dual national -- I'm an Irish and a U.S. citizen -- I did not really "need" Kee's book to learn of modern or ancient Ireland, or the supplementary works I later bought to cover the pre-Viking material his "Ireland: A History" did not; I already knew a fair bit about this as a function of my birth. [A Dublin-born Irishman gave me Kee's book to read while I lived in Cyprus, where English-language books are very dear, and one reads what one may already have read or known to save money.] As a further note, ultra-Republican friends of mine scoff at what they characterize as Kee's "royalist/loyalist" leanings, dismissing out of hand anything he has to say as not quite "shamrock green" enough for a "True Republican" to be citing him as a source on anything Irish. I personally did not find Kee a propagandist for the Crown, so do not subscribe out of hand to this IRA carping. I can grouse, however, at Kee's or his editors' failure to state in which Dublin museum hangs the heartbreaking painting of "The Flight of the Earls," found on page 38 of the book. On one occasion, I'd sought out the painting in the National Gallery in Dublin, only to learn it hung in another museum -- which was closed the day I went after it. Notwithstanding this, in my humble opinion, for those not of Irish extraction or citizenship (or ultra-Republican bent), Kee's book is a good, easily readable, healthy introduction to the Emerald Isle. It is devoid of any blarney-sentimental cliches or slanderous stereotyping of the "glib, gab-gifted, Guinness-gulping" Irishman. And it pulls no punches at Britain's guilt for its arguably deliberate genocide of the Irish in the Great Famine of 1845-49 and those lesser ones that grass-stained starving Irish mouths and blood-stained the 19th century. But it will fill in only so many blanks in one's understanding of that ageless island and its early people, with their lost-in-mists religions, languages, superstitions, culture and monuments. Those wanting more will have to buy other works, such as Peter Beresford Ellis' "The Ancient World of the Celts," for instance. Overall, I found Kee's "Ireland: A History" a good survey course in Ireland, so much so that I bought it as a gift for a friend of Irish extraction, who'd developed a keen interest in tracing his own roots -- and in applying for Irish citizenship. On balance, Kee's book is worth the money and the read.

Recent Irish History

It's not possible to compress the rich history of Ireland into one small book, but this book which spans about two centuries is well written and concise. The book was assigned for a Stanford University Continuing Studies course and was a very interesting overview of recent history. The themes of Irish dissension against the British were well developed.

A sentence offering a fact about and the size relationship between each set of creatures curves around the larger one, accentuating its shape and becoming part of the graphic design. The distinctive cut-paper collages are real showstoppers. The placement of each one against a crisp white background cleverly underscores the differences in size. For example, the tail of the great white shark is shown, and on the following double-page spread the rest of the body swims fiercely, thereby emphasizing its enormity. Through an artful use of color and texture, the marbleized skin of the python and the wrinkled hide of the crocodile seem amazingly real. In several cases, there is a playful overlapping among the animals, as when the gray wolf looks hungrily at the opossum and the tiny painted turtle swims calmly behind the huge shark. As well as offering an inventive exploration of the concepts of big and little, this title serves as an introduction to a group of animals, several of which are endangered. Ages 4^-7. Jenkins, whose previous picture books include Biggest, Strongest, Fastest (1995), here points out the differences in size between animals who are similar in other ways. The artwork combines cuttings of colored, textured papers to form animals that stand out strikingly against white backgrounds. Each spread features a large animal and a related smaller one: sea otter and elephant seal, Siberian tiger and Siamese cat, ostrich and ruby-throated hummingbird. One line of text comments on the two animals' sizes, habits, or habitats. The final pages include a presentation of the comparative sizes of all the animals, a paragraph of additional information about each species, and a bibliography. Handsome textured cut-paper collages on white paper show animals of the same species that are vastly different in size. Since each pair is created to scale (1'' = 8''), viewers can make comparisons. A preface explains that various animals grew bigger or smaller over time to adapt to their habitats. Subsequent spreads depict pairs from the same species--one big, one little--while a single line of text, curving around the larger animal, introduces them: ``Both the Nile crocodile and the African chameleon live in tropical Africa.'' Most of the pairs do not inhabit the same habitat: Siamese cats and tigers are not found together, nor are fennec foxes and gray wolves. Animals include the hummingbird and ostrich, sea otter and elephant seal, capybara and deer mouse. Final pages show the animals in silhouette to scale, with a paragraph of information on each. The collages show artistic license: The Siamese cat is charcoal- colored, instead of the more common representation of buff with dark ears and tail; the capybara doesn't appear to have webbed feet; the Virginia opossum looks strangely unlike itself. The main problem is that Jenkins (Looking Down, 1995, etc.) is unclear about his audience: The opening paragraph on evolution is difficult for young readers; the rest of the book does not reinforce that paragraph for older readers and will put them off as little more than a naming or comparison game. This 1996 book is a precursor to Jenkins' highly acclaimed "Actual Size" (2004). While the latter book fulfills the title's promise by showing animals and animal body parts in their actual size, this book shows them in 1:8 scale; that is, the animals are drawn accurately, but 1/8 smaller than actual size. Although many of the two books' animals are the same, and Jenkins again contrasts large and small animals for contrast and wonder, "Big and Little" is simply not as fascinating as "Actual Size."

Unlike "Actual Size," "Big and Little" shows most of the animals in their entirety. Once doesn't get the "WOW" factor of looking straight into a close-up of giant squid's eyes or a shark's mouth. Big and Little relies greatly on the contrasting sizes of animal pairs on two-page spread ; for example, a Siberian tiger and a Siamese cat, an ostrich and a hummingbird, a cat shark and a great white shark. While Jenkins uses the cut-paper collages of "Actual Size," he seems more timid here; the animal hides and skins are less textured and the color schemes more conventional. Jenkins again includes brief descriptions of each animal pictured in the book, but they are shorter and not as interesting as in his latter book.

If "Actual Size" had never been written I'd give this a higher rating; with his new book Jenkins has set a higher standard for himself and other writers. The main advantages of "Big and Little" are the lower price and the relatively more simple pictures that may be more comprehensible than "Actual Size" to very young toddlers or infants. Aside from that, I strongly recommend his newer book over this one.

Awesome Introduction to Animals

I bought this book after I became familiar with it while researching books about animals for a class project I am working on. The cut-paper collages are beautiful, and visually stunning. The simple text following the shape of the larger animal adds to the appeal of this book. I think this is a great book for young children to introduce them to animals in general, and also the concept of big and little. I am so glad I bought this book, and I know my own children will enjoy reading it, and I can also use it in my preschool classroom. I know this will be a go to book for a long time to come. I would highly recommend this book!

I have Hashimoto's and one must do the elimination month in or to find out what ones triggers are. There really is no other way around your thyroid (and adrenal) problems. With that being said, who wants to give up everything "good" for 30 days and still get your family their meals too?

Enter Karen's cookbook and action plan. If you are exhausted and feel like crap... This book will become your bible! I have named her the patron saint of all those who suffer from Hashimoto's.

Clearly she is a genius. She "gets" the what, where and why's of each and everything one could ever need, who is silently suffering thru their 30 days. Because you have this disease, you need to find your triggers and reinvent what goes on with your diet. This is your new pathway to food and how it will help you. Consider it a primer.

She explains why you need to take action with this plan. Why certain foods are off of your diet. Why you need to track your symptons and then give you a chart to do it with. What to stock your pantry with. Shopping list for each week and every week. For delicious meals that serve four... For each meal of the day. And she tells you what to expect within this diet change, because for us, we will feel better each week.

Then she explains in detail what to do after the 30 days are up. How to reintroduce the 10 foods you took out and how to tell if it is indeed a trigger. Plus, you get another chart to track these Symptoms too.

All of this is important. However, it doesn't mean much if you don't like what you are eating. I was so surprised at how great Tasting everything was. We are talking about three meals a day for 30 days and then some. Recipes that you will reach for again and again - after - your 30 days are up. I would have been lost without her cookbook. The book does all of your thinking for you and avoids all of the hassles... Easy peasy!

Very disappointed - misrepresentation.

I am very disappointed with this book. I thought I would be getting a cookbook that would help me manage the Autoimmune Protocol and provide me with recipes that would help me cook for myself and my family. Well, the book starts off with a 3 day cleanse, where as AIP recommends 3 weeks. Also, right from day 1, they tell you to buy 2 dozen eggs and have an egg salad recipe. Eggs are forbidden in true Hashimoto's AIP, so why are they filling these recipes with so many eggs? I'm doing the 3 week AIP cleanse as recommended and I can only make about 4 recipes in this book, and that will still require some modification. So disappointed and feel that this was poorly represented. This should be a Paleo cookbook and not for Hashimoto's.

Deceitful, full of recipes using ingredients that cause issues in people with autoimmune problems.

Not what I expected. There are a lot of recipes taking up pages that use, nuts, night shades and eggs. When dealing with autoimmune issues like Hashimoto's those are things you need to eliminate and try to reintroduce at a later time. The author has you eating eggs on the 31 day elimination phase. I feel like I wasted my money on this purchase!
