Professora de formação, especializou-se em Modelagem, corte e costura, tendo feito vários cursos livres de Modelagem e Confecção de Roupas tais como Rederb, Toutemome, Coreano, Retangular, Geométrico, Sínger, Moulage, Alfaiataria Italiana, Alfaiataria Alemã, Alfaiataria Francesa, entre outros. Trabalhou com confecção de roupas por 12 anos. Fez modelagem industrial para várias confecções em São Paulo, por 18 anos. Desenvolveu seu próprio método de modelagem a qual usou para escrever este livro. I jumped in to public accounting later in life than most people (age 31) and had ambitions to either work my way up to partner at an existing firm or eventually start my own firm. Heather's book gave me the road map and confidence to achieve my professional goals. Any time the going gets rough (networking, learning new technical skills, dealing with people, etc.), I just turn to the appropriate chapter in this book for a pep talk and action steps that I can take today to keep me moving up my career ladder.

Grade 9 Up–This dictionary is both too modest and too boastful: it condenses hundreds of myths and includes deities, heroes, saints, historical figures, animals, etc., with connections to art and literature, yet it is hardly exhaustive. Double the length of Tresidder's Dictionary of Symbols (Chronicle, 1998; o.p.), it preserves that work's format and adds a brief bibliography. Most of the author's Symbols and Their Meanings (Sterling, 2000) is also found here. Marginalia include primary-source citations and cross-references. Violet backgrounds distinguish 60 short articles on such diverse topics as Trojan War heroes, the Buddha, angels, avatars of Vishnu, dance, liberty, the jaguar, and more. The book includes many non-Western myths and symbols, but a broad perspective in some articles is lacking. The features on architecture, chastity, the ages of man, and religious orders are entirely European in focus. Many articles–e.g., on music, floods, fish, dragons, death, creation–are culturally broader. Africa deserves better coverage. Small black-and-white and/or violet graphics–useful, if not compelling–appear on most pages. Clare Gibson's Signs & Symbols (Grange) and Miranda Bruce-Mitford's Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols (DK, both 1996), though less complete, will attract browsers with their color photos. Hans Biedermann's Dictionary of Symbolism (Facts On File, 1992) is better illustrated, more detailed on Western symbols, less global; Tresidder's volume offers high value for cost, if there is a myth/symbol gap on the reference shelf.–Patricia D. This is the first symbols source to be labeled complete, although the introduction does not specify the qualities that make it so. Its 2,000 entries are twice the number found in other resources on the topic, such as Tresidder's 1998 Dictionary of Symbols: An Illustrated Guide to Traditional Images, Icons, and Emblems (much of which is duplicated in the newer book). The alphabetically arranged entries focus on classical and Christian symbolism but encompass other traditions worldwide. In addition to traditional symbols (e.g., objects, animals, flowers, shapes), the volume includes legends, themes, or concepts important for understanding systems of symbols and historical, mythological, or religious figures. It also includes brief references to the use of the symbol in art. For example, the entry alchemy is identical to that in the Dictionary of Symbols except for a reference to the depiction of alchemists in Vasari's painting The Alchemist's Laboratory. The Complete Dictionary's articles range from a few sentences to one-page panels on more comprehensive topics (Colours; Elements; Music, musical instruments). Its format is similar to Dictionary of Symbols, with see references and sources placed awkwardly in the margins, where they might be missed. Bibliographical references are minimal; most cite only basic sources such as Psalms 42:1 for Stag or Pliny the Elder's Natural History for Phoenix. A geographically arranged bibliography at the end of the volume includes a good selection of older, classic texts on art, mythology, and religion. Illustrations are in-house drawings from original artifacts rather than actual photos. The Complete Dictionary of Symbols is an acceptable reference book for home and small libraries and for public libraries that need a symbol source for general readers. It overlaps very little with the fascinating, graphically oriented Symbols.com (a free Internet source). It is unnecessary for larger collections that already have scholarly sources such as Carl G. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols (Norton, 1994), Hans Biedermann and James Hulbert's Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural Icons and the Meaning behind Them (Facts On File, 1992), and Anthony Stevens' excellent, thematically arranged Ariadne's Clue: A Guide to the Symbols of Humankind (Princeton, 1999). Ortner shows how social theory must both build upon and move beyond classic practice theory in order to understand the contemporary world.

Some of the essays reflect explicitly on theoretical concerns: the relationship between agency and power, the problematic quality of ethnographic studies of resistance, and the possibility of producing an anthropology of subjectivity. Others are ethnographic studies that apply Ortner’s theoretical framework. In these, she investigates aspects of social class, looking at the relationship between race and middle-class identity in the United States, the often invisible nature of class as a cultural identity and as an analytical category in social inquiry, and the role that public culture and media play in the creation of the class anxieties of Generation X. Written with Ortner’s characteristic lucidity, these essays constitute a major statement about the future of social theory from one of the leading anthropologists of our time.

An Orientalist View of Hinduism

Michaels starts with the right questions, but he is unable to shake off the distorting glasses of Orientalist Western scholarship that has dealt with Hinduism either as history of conflict between race and caste or as magic and mysticism. The harder Michaels tries, the more confused his writing becomes. This is typical of writers who know India from books and whose experience with life within the Hindu tradition is very superficial; a year in an Indian city as a student simply does not provide the understanding that is required. As things stand, he simply repeates Orientalist prejudices.
Michaels' analysis of the difference between Vedism and "mainstream Hinduism" is not even correct, showing his lack of insight into both. It is curious that he defines Hinduism as three different religions, insisting that is different from other religions. How about the variety of Christian religions: Catholic, Mormon (with its own book), Charismatic (the ones that get bitten by snakes and speak in tongues), and the many different Protestant Churches? Or Islam with its Sunni, Shi'a, Ismaili, Wahhabi, Sufi, and other sects? If Michaels is trying to show how Hinduism is different sociologically from other religions, he has failed. He should have asked the question: In what sense is obtaining knowledge in Hinduism different from that in other religions? He would have then found the answers to the basic questions posited in the beginning of the book.

About the Author
Nevil Shute Norway was born in 1899 in Ealing, London. He studied Engineering Science at Balliol College, Oxford. Following his childhood passion, he entered the fledgling aircraft industry as an aeronautical engineer working to develop airships and, later, airplanes. In his spare time he began writing and he published his first novel, Marazan, in 1926, using the name Nevil Shute to protect his engineering career. In 1931 he married Frances Mary Heaton and they had two daughters. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve where he worked on developing secret weapons. After the war he continued to write and settled in Australia where he lived until his death in 1960. His most celebrated novels include Pied Piper (1942), A Town Like Alice (1950), and On the Beach (1957).

Wonderful book which works on many levels

Too few of Nevil Shute's books are in print in this country--fortunately, this is one of the better one.
When an old Scottish man dies, London solicitor Noel Strachan learns that his sole heir is a young woman named Jean Paget. Strachan acts as her trustee, dispensing money as needed under the will, but the old lawyer soon finds himself falling for the young lady. Before Strachan has done more than shown her London's culture, Paget is off to Malaya to repay the village where she stayed during WWII by digging a well. She convinces Strachan to release the money by telling the story (based on real life) of how she and other women were held prisoner by the Japanese, but eventually found refuge in a small village. Before they go there, they encounter a young Australian, Joe Harmon, who is crucified for stealing food for them. When Paget returns to Malaya, she learns that Harmon survived and returned to Australia. Meanwhile, Harmon has gone to England to seek her, having thought she was married when they met in Malaya. They eventually meet up in Australia (Strachan, out of his own love for Jean, has gently attempted to frustrate the meeting). Jean, determined to make her home in Harmon's home area, sets out to make the godforsaken town into "A Town Like Alice"--a modern town like Alice Springs.
It is a fascinating story. But overlooked in every review I read is the role of the old solicitor, Noel Strachan, who finds himself in love with Jean some decades too late, and is unable to serve as a rival to Joe Harmon. He soon surrenders his unexpressed (even to himself) love out of regard for Jean's interest. His unrequited love, lends a poignant note to the book.
There are no villains. Even the dark characters, like the Japanese who crucified Harmon, are seen as human beings doing the best they can. The fact that the acts they do can be terrible do not alter the fact that they are human beings, and they are painted as such.
Harmon and the other Australian characters are not painted as well as the other characters; perhaps Shute, who had only recently emigrated to Australia, was afraid of erring in characterizations.
Still, a fine book that made a great miniseries.

One of the best books I have ever read!

I am a reader; I devour books. A Town Like Alice is one of my very favorites. I come back to it time and again, whenever I need to lose myself in the heat of Malaysia or the dust of Australia. This book is so well written that I can feel the stones in the road as Jean marches along with the other women in their "Death March". I can feel the despair she feels when she believes Joe to be dead and her intense joy when she discovers that he is still alive. The story is timeless. My mother-in-law,who was a bride during World War II, first introduced me to this book saying that it was her all time favorite, and even though I came of age in the 70's, the book speaks to me as well. Its message of love's survival in the face of desperate odds gives us all a sense of hope.

A timeless classic of love and adventure.

When asked what is my favorite book I always respond that I have two. The first is "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, and the second is "A Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute. I've recommended it to many people over the years and I haven't found one person yet that could put it down. It's a true classic, one that I've enjoyed over and over. Shute's better known "On The Beach" is as good as "A Town Like Alice" but it is much darker in content. "Alice" is a sweet love story that spans time and distance. If you haven't read it yet do yourself a favor, pick it up, sit down in a comfy chair and enjoy.
